Sidney R. "Sid" Smith

Sidney R. "Sid" Smith, 77, of N. Anderson St. in Morganton died Sunday, December 7, 2008 following a lengthy illness. He was born July 26, 1931 in Scioto County, Ohio and was the son of the late Vivian Ross Smith and Dorothy Walker Smith. Sid graduated from Eastern Kentucky University; was a U. S. Army veteran of the Korean conflict; and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Morganton. He loved sports, especially basketball, and enjoyed boating and fishing on the Ohio River.Sidney is survived by his wife of 46 years, Mary Helen Ward Smith of the home; a daughter, Maria Smith Yatros and husband, Gy, of Bradenton, FL; and a grandson, Nicholas Yatros.A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 10, 2008 in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home with. Dr. Thomas A. Bland, Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 10 until 11 am at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church Building Fund, PO Drawer 459, Morganton, NC 28680 or to a charity of one’s choice.
