Steve Woody, 75, of Morganton, NC, transitioned peacefully to his Heavenly home on Sunday, September 15, 2024 while surrounded by his family.

Born in Burke County, NC on March 21, 1949, he was the son of the late Frank Junior Woody and Frances Perkins Woody.

He served in the US Air Force and was a true patriot.

Steve loved his church, Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church, where he was a member for 46 years. He served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, and was the chairman of the Mission Team to which he devoted a lot of his time. Along with his church, the South Mountain Christian Camp was very close to his heart. Steve volunteered many hours there on a variety of projects. He definitely had a servant’s heart and loved his Jesus. He faithfully contributed to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital because he had a heart for the children there.

Steve was a friend to all and dearly loved his many friends and family. He especially enjoyed family gatherings, and was tremendously proud of his grandchildren, who lovingly referred to him as “Pop.”

Hunting and fishing were some of his favorite hobbies, and he enjoyed all types of automotive racing. For many years, his passion was working alongside his son, Steven, developing their own racing legacy. This included events all over the southeast, which produced hundreds of wins and a couple championships. He retired from Dana Corporation and later bought and restored his beloved 1930 Chevrolet, of which he was very proud.

Steve is survived by his wife, Wilma Baker Woody; children, Jennifer Woody West (Jason) and Christopher Steven Woody; grandchildren, Jesse West (Laura), Joseph West, Jonas West, and Julia West; brother, David Warren Woody (Janice); sister, Shelia Woody Little (Bryan); sister-in-law, Lynn McGimsey, and his canine companion, Shorty.

In addition to his parents, Steve was preceded in death by his adopted brother, Michael McGimsey

The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3 p.m., Friday, September 20, 2024 at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church. The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. in the church with Dr. David Mills and Rev. Keith Burkhart officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to South Mountain Christian Camp, PO Box 9, Bostic, NC 28018 or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
