Committal
Susan Smith Shuping 83, died peacefully Wednesday, July 19, 2017, at the Forest at Duke Retirement Community in Durham, NC, after living for twelve years with Alzheimer’s disease. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, James A. Shuping of Durham; four children: Bob (Deborah) Shuping of Nokesville, VA; David (Laura) Shuping of Chantilly, VA; Rev. Ken Shuping, of Salem, VA; Terry (Neil) Angelotti of Centreville, VA; and eight grandchildren.
She was the only child of Robert and Donna Smith and was raised in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. The couple met in Hawaii where Jim (a native of Morganton) was stationed as an Air Force officer. In the following years, Mrs. Shuping made a home for her growing family at eight different military posts around the U.S. She encouraged her children to achieve academically and believed that music was an important part of a well-rounded education. She was a scout leader, was active in her church, and attended all her children’s performances and school events. She enjoyed cooking, travelling, and entertaining friends. From 1983-2000, the Shuping’s lived at Holiday Shores.
The family are grateful to the staff of the Forest at Duke Health Center for the competent, loving care Mrs. Shuping had during five years in the health facility.
Viewing will be at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, July 22, 2017 with a funeral Mass following at 11:00 a.m.. Private burial at Forest Hill Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Durham. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Forest at Duke Benevolent Fund, 2701 Pickett Road, Durham, NC, 27705.
Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
