Visitation
Committal
Theodore Richard DeAugustinis passed from this life on Sunday June 4, 2017 after a period of declining health after 95 plus years of a life well lived.
"Papa ", "Papa D", "Uncle Dutch", "Mr. D", a man of many nicknames, was born October 26, 1921 in Paterson, New Jersey; a son of the late William DeAugustinis and Martha Kecheisen DeAugustinis. He was a WWII veteran of the US Navy seeing active duty in the Pacific theatre. He retired from Dart Container, previously Solo Cup and Owens Illinois as a sales representative.
In addition to his parents "Ted" was preceded in death by his brothers William DeAugustinis and John August.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years Evelyn Lees DeAugustinis of the home; sons, Richard Lee and wife Sally of Nebo, NC and James Alan of Murfreesboro, TN. and a sister, Jane Rosameilia of New York, NY. Also surviving are his grandsons Matthew Lee and wife Karolina of Redding, CA and Michael James of Denver, CO as well as great grandsons, Gavin Lee and Gabriel Michael of Redding, CA. In addition he was loved and will be greatly missed by a host of nephews, nieces and friends.
As a well-travelled couple, Ted had been an active member of several United Methodist Churches most recently attending North Morganton Methodist Church. Raised in New Jersey, his many occupations and professional career took him to New York City, Toledo, Ohio and Raleigh, NC before settling in Morganton some 16 years ago to be closer to family. Ted was a former member of the Masonic Lodge of Hawthorne, NJ and the Elks in the same town.
In retirement, Ted was an avid golf enthusiast and most enjoyed time with his extended family, long walks on the Greenway and other venues with his faithful four legged companion "Brandy", meeting and greeting new friends and generally spreading good cheer. He was active with local WWII veterans groups and faithfully attended for many years his naval ship reunions — the USS Canberra. He could often be recognized wearing one of his many WWII Veteran's baseball caps and he modestly enjoyed the frequent recognition and acknowledgment of his military service. He was truly a fine representative of what has been called "the greatest generation".
A celebration of his life and a witness to the resurrection will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Morganton on Thursday June 15 at 5PM with the Reverend Adam Bowling officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association (heart.org), 4217 Park Place Ct., Glen Allen, VA 23060-9979 or the Disabled American Veterans (dav.org), PO Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250¬0301.
Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family.
