Thomas “Tommy” Nance, 70, of Morganton, NC passed away on Friday, May 31, 2019 at Burke Hospice and Palliative Care. He was born April 9, 1949 in Cabarrus County to the late Glenn Addison Nance and Evelyn Elizabeth Thomas Nance. Tommy was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Ladder Day Saints where he served as an Elder. He graduated from the North Carolina School for the Deaf in 1969. He worked for Western Carolina Center and NCSD, where he later retired. While at NCSD, he worked in the dormitory and was the Scout leader for the Explorer boy’s and girl’s group. He was a past president of the NC National Association of the Deaf and a member of the NCSD at Morganton Foundation.
He is survived by his sister, Glenda Turnmire and husband, Gene, of Valdese, NC; niece, Angie Hudgins and husband, Jeff, of Morganton; great-nephews, Matt Hudgins and wife, Lauren, of Icard, NC and Andy Hudgins of Morganton; great-great-nephews, Connor and Cameron Hudgins; close friends, Kenneth Simmons and wife, Donna, Mark Hendrix, Randall Bostian and wife, Jennifer and their boys who thought of him as a father.
The family will receive friends from 1:00pm until 2:00pm, Tuesday, June 4, 2019 at Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center. The service will be at 2:00pm, in the Colonial Chapel of the funeral home with Bishop Wayne Longhurst officiating. Entombment will follow at Burke Memorial Park Mausoleum.
