Vernon Briscoe Williams, 88, of Morganton, NC died Tuesday, December 14, 2010 at the Charles George V.A. Medical Center in Asheville, NC. Born in Burke County, NC on April 24, 1922, he was the son of the late Edward Williams and Addie Cline Williams. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, during which he earned three Purple Hearts and two Bronze Stars. Vernon was carpenter and a jack-of-all-trades, and he owned a patent for a fishing tool.Vernon is survived by his wife, Katie Poarch Williams of the home; a daughter, Annette Williams Clontz and husband, Gregory David, of Morganton; a grandson, Michael Clontz of Morganton; and a host of nephews and nieces.In addition to his parents, Vernon was preceded in death by thirteen brothers and sisters.The funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, December 18, 2010 in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home with Rev. David Orders officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in Burke Memorial Park with military honors provided by the N.C.
