Vernon Jay Horney, 43, of Morganton died Tuesday, November 7, 2017. Born in Burke County, NC on February 5, 1974, he was the son of Leroy Horney and Kathy Lee McGuire Horney. He was a big-hearted man who loved everyone, especially his grandchildren. Vernon enjoyed horses, motorcycles, hotrods, Mountain Dew, and NASCAR.
Mr. Horney is survived by wife of 25 years, Melissa Horney; sons, Levi Horney and wife, Erika, Jesse Horney and wife, Jennifer, and Matt Moretz; daughters, Aaliyah Rudisill and Alisha Mills; grandchildren, Daisy, Madison, Lincoln, Nathan, Cameron, Destiny, Taylor, Tamara, Mea, and Junior; sisters, Wanda Clark and husband, Jamie, and Mary Canipe and husband, Matt; nephews, Kyle Clark, Kelby Clark, Justin Reed, and John Reed; a niece, Bethany Reed; mother-in-law, Arlie Ruth Reed; and brothers-in-law, David Reed and wife, Stella, and Allen Reed and wife, Kim.
Vernon was preceded in death by a son, Darrell Moretz; grandparents, Jay Hoyle and Pansy McGuire, and Soloman and Fannie Horney; father-in-law, Gordon Chapman; and uncles, Danny, Galan, and Gerald McGuire.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, November 10, 2017 at Sossoman Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, November 11, 2017 at Elk Valley Baptist Church in Banner Elk with the Rev. Rocky Reece and Keith Gwyn officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
