Vernon Leslie Wellman, 87, of Morganton died Monday, November 14, 2016. Vernon was born October 10, 1929 in Burke County to the late William Leslie Wellman and Essie Pearl Denton Wellman. He was a loving uncle, who was more like a father to his nieces and nephews, always making sure they were taken care of. Vernon was a veteran of the US Air Force and retired from Broughton Hospital, a lifetime member of the American Motorcycle Association, Moose Lodge and the American Legion.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Shirley Wellman Morrissey; and a brother, Johnny Mack Wellman.
He is survived by nieces, Lynn Fisher and husband, Mike, Teresa “Terri” Kincaid and husband, Scott, and Sherri Ludlam; nephews, Jamie Morrissey and wife, Sarah and Chris Wellman; great-nieces, Elissa Kincaid, Taylor Morrissey, Samantha Fisher McLeod, and Emma Morrissey; great-nephews, Michael Ludlam, Tyler Ludlam, and Caleb Morrissey; great-great nephews, Sully Zimmerman, and Bowen McLeod and a number of close friends and extended family.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., Thursday, November 17, 2016 at Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center. The funeral service will follow at 3:00 p.m.in the Chapel with the Rev. Eddy Bunton officiating. Burial will follow at Burke Memorial Park with military honors conducted by the US Air Force and Caldwell County Veterans Honor Guard..
