Versie Carswell Chapman, 96, of Morganton, NC peacefully passed away on Wednesday, October 18, 2017. Born in Morganton on June 9, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Charlie Wesley Carswell and Minnie Chapman Carswell. Versie worked at Morganton Hosiery Mill until she became a beautician and opened Versie’s Beauty Shop.
She married Major Carswell. They divorced and she then married Cecil Chapman.
Mrs. Chapman was a devout Christian and was active in Walker Road Baptist Church. As her Alzheimer’s Disease progressed, she attended Shining Light Baptist Church with her son, Joe.
Versie is survived by three children, Kay Carswell Barker of Myrtle Beach, SC, Joseph Clyde Carswell of Morganton, and Daryl Richard Carswell of Morganton; grandchildren, Mark Brooks of Kings Mountain, NC, Jill Rhinehart of Kings Mountain, and Chelsey Taveniere of Morganton; great-grandchildren, Kinsey and Nicolas Rhinehart and Abigail and Zachary Brooks.
The family will receive friends from 4:30 to 6 p.m., Sunday, October 22, 2017 at Sossoman Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, October 23, 2017 in the Colonial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Jill Rhinehart and Rev. Danny Castle officiating. Burial will follow in Burke Memorial Park.
