Virginia Shell Buchanan, 81, of Valdese, NC went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 9, 2011 at the Burke Palliative Care Center. Born in Burke County, NC on January 6, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Jessie Earl Shell, Sr. and Flossie Reed Shell. Virginia was an avid church member of Connelly Springs Freewill Baptist Church where she was active in her Sunday School Class and sang in the choir. She retired from Active Sports and worked at several other textile plants. Her many hobbies included collecting baby dolls, reading, embroidering, and cooking.Virginia is survived by her husband of 45 years, Eugene Buchanan of the home; sons, Roby "Bud" Barrier and wife, Cristina, of Treemont, UT and Danny Buchanan and wife, Mary, of KS; daughters, Candace Barrier of Old Fort, NC, Roberta Bennett and husband, Doug, of Conyers, GA, and Debra Buchanan of Asheville, NC; twelve grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.In addition to her parents, Virginia was preceded in death by a son, Roy R. Barrier, Jr.; a daughter, Elsie Lowman; brothers, Wallace Shell and Jessie Earl Shell, Jr; and a sister, Louise Beam.The funeral will be held at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, March 12, 2011 at Connelly Springs Freewill Baptist Church with Reverends Rick Davis and Aaron Causby officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m. prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 1721 Enon Road, Valdese, NC 28690.
