Walter “Mutt” Whitener, 84, of Morganton, NC died Wednesday, February 24, 2016. Born in Mecklenburg County, VA on May 22, 1931, he was the son of the late Roy A. Whitener and Mary Hershman Whitener. Mutt was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and retired from the Army after 23 years. He was the greatest husband, a good father, and a loving grandfather.
Mr. Whitener is survived by his wife of 49 years, Earline Suddreth Whitener of the home; daughters, Mary Hightower and Donna Hightower, both of Charlotte, NC; two grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Walter was preceded in death by a brother, Roy A. Whitener, Jr.
The family will receive friends from 1 – 2:30 p.m., Saturday, February 27, 2016 at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. The funeral will be held at church at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Larry Cline officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors provided by the N.C. National Guard and the Caldwell County Veterans Honor Guard.
