Walter “Walt” Benfield

Walter “Walt” Benfield, 81, of Morganton, NC died Saturday, July 23, 2016.  Born in Burke County, NC on March 12, 1935, he was the son of the late Richard Leroy Benfield and Rebecca Whisnant Benfield.  Walt was a member of Calvary Assembly of God.  He retired from Henredon Furniture in 1999 after over 40 years of service.  He loved to make people laugh and many people knew him as a hard-working man who loved to be outside taking care of animals.

Mr. Benfield is survived by his wife of 52 years, Nora Branch Benfield; six sons, Robert Benfield, Lenior “Babe” Benfield, James “Lard” Benfield, Tracy Benfield, Justin Benfield, and Richard Moffitt, all of Morganton; a daughter, Mitzi Moffitt Beaver of Granite Falls, NC; a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two sisters, Helen Benfield Browning of Nebo, NC and Frances Benfield Setzer of Drexel, NC; a brother, Ralph Benfield of Morganton; and a number of nieces, nephews, and other extended family.

In addition to his parents, Walt was preceded in death by two sons, Richard “Buddy” Benfield and Larry “Chum” Benfield; three brothers, Leroy, Larry, and Daniel Benfield; and two sisters, Mary Lou McDade and Rebecca Ramsey.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m., Monday, July 25, 2016 at Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center.  The funeral will be held at noon, Monday in the Colonial Chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Charlie Crump officiating.  Burial will follow at Burke Memorial Park.
