Weldon Peter Gates, 87, of Morganton, NC died Monday, April 6, 2015 at Morganton Long Term Care where he had been a resident for nine years. Born in Burke County, NC on June 19, 1927, he was a son of the late George and Mary Denton Gates. Weldon retired from Drexel-Heritage Furnishings after 45 years of employment, and he formerly attended Hildebran View Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lillie Brittain Gates; brothers, James, Robert, and Luther Gates and a number of half brothers and sisters.
Mr. Gates is survived by his children, Weldon Junior Gates and Shirley Marie Kimmer, both of Morganton; grandchildren, Tammy Jean Gates, Angela Dawn Happoldt and husband, Antwan, Melissa Ann Carswell, William Keith Kimmer and wife, Tammy, Tracy Marie Kimmer, and Amanda Dawn Shaffer; and a number of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, April 19, 2015 in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center with the Reverend Dennis Carswell officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home for one hour prior to the service. The family extends their appreciation to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, Grace Hospital, and Morganton Long Term Care #2 for their attentive and compassionate care of Mr. Gates.
