William “Don” Chapman, 85, of Morganton, NC, died Tuesday, November 5, 2024.

Born in Burke County, NC on April 6, 1939, he was the son of the late Charlie G. Chapman and Vertie Prewitt Chapman.

Don was a member of Zion Baptist Church. He was a hard worker who worked multiple jobs to ensure his family had what they needed. Don loved his family, especially his grandchildren, and he enjoyed gardening and having breakfast with his friends at Hardees.

Don is survived by his sons, Tracy Chapman (Tracy) and Ty Chapman (Cindy); grandchildren, Logan Chapman (Caroline), Halee Powell (Garet), and Evan Chapman (Angela); great-grandson, Cooper Powell; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his wife, Vernie Marie Whisenant Chapman; sisters, Brenda Chapman Johnson, Sue Chapman Benfield, Mae Bullins, Vivian Ross, Betty Chapman Garrison, Louise Denton, Thelma Smith, and Murrell Dale; and brothers, Willard Chapman and Earsel Chapman.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m., Monday, November 11, 2024 at Zion Baptist Church. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. in the church with Rev. Keith Rose and Rev. David Orders officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
