William "Ed" Clontz, 89, died Wednesday, October 15, 2008, following a period of declining health. He was born in Burke County on June 8, 1919 and was a son of the late Thurman and Mattie Puckett Clontz. Mr. Clontz was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II and worked at Drexel Furniture for a number of years and Great Lakes Carbon and in his later years worked as a carpenter. He was a member of Mt. View #2 Baptist Church. William was a member of the Adult Men’s Sunday School Class and was an avid beekeeper.Surviving are his son, Wayne Clontz and his wife, Betty, of Morganton; grandchildren, Barry Clontz and his wife, Vanessa, and Gregory Clontz and his wife, Annette; great-grandchildren, Phillip Clontz and Victoria Owensby; two nieces; and one nephew.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Clontz was preceded in death by his wife, Lucy Mills Clontz, and by sisters, Virginia Patton and Jess Queen Bridges.The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, October 17, 2008 at Mt. View #2 Baptist Church with Rev. Ken Mashburn officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors conducted by Valdese ceremonial team post 234.At other times the family will be at the home of Wayne Clontz. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Sossoman Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
