William John Mathis, 66, of Morganton, NC, passed away Friday, June 7, 2019. Born on November 1, 1952, he was the son of the late William and Mary Mathis. William was a member of Nowling’s Chapel Freewill Baptist Church.
William loved the Lord, his family and church family. He was a proud US Army Veteran of the Vietnam War. William enjoyed doing anything outside, but especially hunting. He enjoyed volunteering with the Red Cross and serving people at the Burke County Soup Kitchen.
William is survived by his wife, Patrice Mathis; brothers, Bobby J. Mathis (Wanda), Samuel J. Mathis (Elizabeth), Rev. Douglas Mathis (Deborah); sister, Mary Louise Hamby; and a number of beloved nieces, nephews, extended family; and his beloved canine companion, “Rascal.”
In addition to his parents, William is preceded in death by his brothers, David and Van Dora Mathis; sister, Vanessa Mathis; niece, Wendy Mathis Franklin; father and mother -in-law, Carl and Sarah Virginia Rogers; brother-in-law, Carlos Hamby.
The family will receive friends from 1 pm until 2 pm, Monday, June 10, 2019 at Nowling’s Chapel Baptist Church. The funeral service will be held at 2 pm in the church with the Revs. Darvy Hensley and Doug Mathis officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Military Honors will be provided by the NC National Guard and Caldwell County Veterans Honor Guard.
