William Mercer Lewis, born July 31, 1930 in Bridgeport, Connecticut, son of Isaac Walker and Wilhelmme Fanton Lewis passed away on August 6, 2014, at Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, with his wife and children by his side.
He served in the United States Navy from July 18, 1950 through July 12, 1956. He worked for the Central Intelligence Agency from 1957 until retiring on August 8, 1980. He went to work for ITT Teves in Culpeper, Virginia for 10 years, retiring for the second time at 62. He was a charter member of the Optimist Club in Culpeper, volunteered with both the St. Stephen’s Food Closet and the Friends of the Library. He was a member of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew at St. Stephen’s Church. After moving to Morganton, North Carolina in 2011, he became a member of Grace Episcopal Church. He volunteered with the Backpack Program at Grace Episcopal Church, providing food and helping to pack the backpacks.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Viola Broadbent and his daughter, Debra Leigh Cropp.
Mr. Lewis is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jeanne C. Lewis; children, Norma DeFago and husband Don; David Lewis; Michael Lewis and wife Renee; Kim Gudyka and husband Joe; Son-in-law, John Cropp; grandchildren, Heidi Laraway; Stephanie Weigel; Miriam Stilwell; Jonathan Weigel; Matthew DeFago; Christopher DeFago; Daniel Lewis; Kevin Lewis; Hayley Lewis; Katelyn Gudyka; Joseph Gudyka and seven great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at Grace Church, Morganton, on Saturday, August 16, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. with Deacon Michael Jenkins officiating. There will be a reception following the service in the Parish Hall of Grace Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Backpack Program at Grace Episcopal Church, 303 S. King Street, Morganton, NC 28655.
Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
