Wilma Putnam Wilson

Wilma Putnam Wilson, 97, of Hope Ridge Assisted Living died August 3, 2020 at her residence of eight years.

Born in Mitchell County, NC on December 11th, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Samuel William Putnam and Nola Mae Wilson Putnam.

She was a great wife, mother, sister and homemaker. She also was an accomplished seamstress and was even featured on the Betty Feezor Show (WBTV) after winning the State Woman’s Club Sewing Contest. She did Brazilian embroidery, doll making, basket making and paintings. The family considered her a gourmet cook who used all the pots and pans at least twice in preparing a meal.

She taught beginners Sunday school at First Baptist Church in Glen Alpine and sang in the choir. She was a member of the Glen Alpine Woman’s Club and she had been a member of the Quaker Meadows Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She worked at Grace Hospital and then Community Pharmacy after her children were teenagers.

Wilma with her deceased husband of 60 years Mack Burton Wilson, a World War II veteran, were for 57 years active members of the "Old Hickory" 30th Infantry Division Association, Tarheel Chapter and had been active members of the First Baptist Church in Glen Alpine and Morganton. They lived in Glen Alpine and raised their family for almost 60 years.

In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by a son, Samuel Keith Wilson; and sisters, Hattie Putnam Davis, Georgia Putnam Shelton and Amelia Putnam Kincaid and their spouses.

Surviving are a son, Phillip B. Wilson and his wife, Shirley of Morganton; a daughter, Belinda Inez Wilson of Raleigh, NC, a sister, Carol Putnam Morgan of Walkertown and a grandson, Chad B. Wilson, wife Melissa and great granddaughter, Georgia, of Morganton.

Her Hope Ridge Assisted Living family have helped significantly in allowing Wilma to maintain a wonderful quality of life. Wilma’s family deeply appreciates the owner, Chesley Austin Lee and her staff at Hope Ridge Assisted Living who have treated Wilma as if she were their mother.

Services will be arranged in the future at the Snowhill Cemetery graveside in Mitchell County for family and friends. Instead of flowers help a neighbor in need.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
