Wilma Rockett Powell

Wilma Rockett Powell, 64, of Shady Rough Rd., Icard went home to be with her Heavenly Father on Friday, December 11, 2009 following an extended illness. She was born in Burke County on September 12, 1945 and was a daughter of the late William Melvin Rockett and Mattie Viola Bandy Rockett. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, Melvin, Kenneth, William, and Oliver Rockett, and by a sister, Mildred Rockett Walker. Mrs. Powell was a member of First Baptist Church in Hildebran. She worked as a registered nurse for 35 years at Grace Hospital and retired from Broughton Hospital. Wilma was an avid reader.Surviving are her husband of 42 years, Cecil A. Powell, of the home; daughters, Renee´ Powell Hollaway and her husband, David, of Morganton and Kimberly Powell of Valdese; grandchildren, Isaac and Hannah Hollaway and Sydney Powell Smith; and a number of nieces and nephews.Funeral services will be at 3:00 p.m. Monday, December 14, 2009 in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home with Rev. Ronald R. Arndt officiating. Burial will follow at Burke Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Sunday at Sossoman Funeral Home.
