Winfred Earl Brown, 91 of Morganton, NC passed away unexpectedly Saturday, August 24, 2013 at Grace Hospital. Born January 6, 1922 in Hiddenite, NC, he was a son of the late Otis B. and Ruby Lackey Brown. A World War II U.S. Army veteran, he served in the Pacific Theater. Winfred retired from Alba Waldensian with thirty years of employment. He was an active member of Bethel United Methodist Church on Bethel Rd. where he was a former member of the choir. He was an avid gardener. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Zeppie Brittain Brown; and brothers, Grady and Thomas Brown.Surviving are his daughter, Freddie Brown Clarke of Morganton; a granddaughter, April Clarke-McGee and her husband, Treg of Morganton; great grandchildren, Ashton and Nicholas McGee; a sister, Frances Nance of Oregon; and a special companion, Hazel Clarke.The funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 28, 2013 at Bethel United Methodist Church on Bethel Rd. with the Rev. Butch Osborne officiating. Burial with military honors by the N.C. National Guard and the Caldwell Veterans Honor Guard will follow at Burke Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the church for thirty minutes before the service. Memorial gifts may be made to Bethel United Methodist Church, 1328 Bethel Rd., Morganton, NC 28655.
