David graduated from Salem High School, after which he joined the US Army. He was employed by the General Electric Corporation plant in Hickory, NC and retired after 30 years’ service.

David never met a stranger and had a tender, loving heart for his sons, granddaughter and sisters as well as for friends, the elderly and for children. He was an active member of Denton’s Chapel Church until health concerns limited his participation.
The family wants to extend special thanks to Samantha Greene for her loving support and assistance during David’s illness; his girlfriend, Karen Rollins, for the faithful, caring help she provided to David these past months; to VIA Health Partners of Burke County; and to all of the members of Denton’s Chapel who were faithful to check in and offer support in David’s final months.
The family will receive friends from 12 to 1 p.m., Wednesday, July 17, 2024 at Denton’s Chapel Church. The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. in the church with Rev. Jimmy Queen officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors provided by the NC National Guard and the Caldwell County Veteran’s Honor Guard.

Tribute Wall
Leave a tribute for David Leon Lane.
David, thank you for always being there for members of our family. You called to check on people, watched the neighborhood for anything unusual, and were always smiling and had kind words for everyone. How we will miss you! Know that we all loved you very much! Rest peacefully now, and know that your family will forever be indebted to you.
David was my precious, beloved first cousin. David, Edith, my brother Richard and I grew up as children together on Bollinger Loop. We were cousins, playmates and friends... friendship was a deep, abiding part of our relationship that stayed strong all through these years. As we lost aunts and uncles, David became a pillar of strength, wisdom, advice and help in our family circle and was widely respected and beloved in the community at large. We have all lost a very valuable person, a link to a sense of something good, caring, kind and stable. I already miss him terribly...there has always been David in my life. My world is now a little smaller and a little lonelier. David's obituary is a wonderful, loving tribute but he was so much more than any obituary could ever capture or communicate. I love you, David -- will joyously greet you in the Resurrection! Amy
David was our friend and neighbor for 44 years. He was a very respectful man and always was so complimentary of our son, Travis! He was always telling me how proud he was of Travis and saying he was “so smart”! We appreciate David for allowing Travis to be a renter of his “homeplace” since 2009. All of us are going to miss David and his waves and chats as we drove by his garage where he often sat. Lucille Matthis
I was not blessed to have known David for a very long time, but on the few occasions we chatted, I could tell he was a wonderful, caring person. In fact, he was one of the first people to welcome me to my new home down the street, taking the time to drive up my driveway on his way by to say hello and introduce himself to a total stranger. I was so touched by his warm welcome. As an icon of the neighborhood, I know his presence will be sorely missed, but I hope his family and those who knew him well will take solace in the fact that he will never be forgotten as he will reside in your heart and in all your wonderful memories of him. May he rest in peace.
