Frances Smith, 90, of Morganton, NC, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, June 30, 2023.

Born in Rutherford County, NC on November 12, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Laxton Toney and Leona Jones Toney.

Frances was a member of Calvary Free Will Baptist Church. She loved her church and church family. Frances enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and quilting. Ever an artist, she also loved to draw red birds. Mrs. Smith was a kind-hearted person who would do her best to help others, and she never met a stranger.

Frances is survived by her sons, Michael D. Smith (Teena) and Jerry D. Smith (Sonya); step-son, James Lee Watts (Gladys); grandchildren, Michael Smith (Helen) and Kellie Smith; great-grandchildren, Toby and Noah Smith; sister, Etta Bivens Hagan; and half-sister, Evelyn Jones.

In addition to her parents, Frances was preceded in death by her husband, James Farrow Smith; and brothers, Furman, Fred, and Clifford Toney.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m., Sunday, July 2, 2023 at Sossoman Funeral Home. The graveside service will follow at Burke Memorial Park with Pastor Freddy Lindsey officiating.

At other times the family will be at the residence of Michael and Teena Smith, 3051 Franklin Lane, Morganton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lymphoma Research Foundation, Wall Street Plaza, 88 Pine Street, Suite 2400, New York, NY 10005.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Aunt Frances, Dean and I have been so blessed to have had you as a part of our lives. You are one of the most loving people I have ever known and anyone who has known you must also love you. I look around my home and have reminders of you everywhere.-- the Calla Lillies in my front yard; the screen paintings on the wall above my dining room table; the many crocheted scarves you gave me: the curtains you gave me; but above all, the love I received from you. Dean and I miss you and feel you left this world before your time. You were the most youthful and vibrant 90-year old we have ever known. --Delight Van Horn
