Jack Walton Powell, 82, of Morganton, NC passed away Wednesday, December 21, 2022.

Born in Burke County, NC on May 11, 1940, he was the son of the late Walter Glenn Powell and Jessie Irene Moore Powell. Jack was a lifelong member of Zion Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and loved to sing in the choir. He was a veteran of the NC National Guard.

As a young man, Jack worked with his father cutting pulp wood. He then worked for many years at Mull Oil before retiring from Dana Corporation.

Jack enjoyed classic cars and attending car shows. He never met a stranger and could talk to anyone for hours.

Jack is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary Caroline Cobb Powell; children, Susan Powell Beach (Warren), Jeffrey Powell, Jonathan Powell (Amy Henson), and Jacob Powell (Caelee); grandchildren, Larren Williams (Robert), Taylor Gragg, Charles Powell, and McErynn Powell; great-granddaughter, Adaleigh Gragg; sister, Jean Ramsey (Poe); and brother-in-law, Bobby Patton.

In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by a sister, Mabel Patton.

The family will receive friends from 12 to 1 p.m., Wednesday, December 28, 2022 at Zion Baptist Church. The memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. in the church with Rev. Keith Rose and Dr. Ralph May officiating. Military honors will be provided by the NC National Guard.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
