Jane Smith Mackorell Hord

Jane Smith Mackorell Hord, 87, of Morganton, NC, died Sunday, May 19, 2024. She was a great woman, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was born in Morganton on February 5, 1937 to the late L. E. and Willie Smith.

Jane was known for the twinkle in her eyes, dressing to the nines, and the ability to turn weeds into flowers. Her happy place was covered in dirt in her garden or on a shopping spree. She was a fabulous cook, never followed a recipe, and always burned the bread. The memories of friends and family gathering in the kitchen are what those who are left behind will remember the most. Everyone who remembers her is asked to celebrate Jane’s life in their own way. Raising a glass of their favorite drink in her memory would be quite appropriate.

Jane leaves behind a very fun, loving, dysfunctional family that she loved very much. They include her daughters, Sissy Mackorell (Brian) and Susan Ferree; grandchildren, Amanda Hinds (Jamiel), Jocelyn Hollifield (Jake), Emma O’Neill (Chris), and Hannah Ferree (Joshua Espinoza); and great-grandchildren, Penelope Jane Hinds, Jennie Blue O’Neill, Amelia Rose Hinds, and Eloise Marie Hollifield.

In addition to her parents, Jane was preceded in death by her first husband, John C. Mackorell, Jr.; second husband, W.A. Hord, Jr.; brother, Vernon Smith (Bouly); and sister, Ann Thompson (Ned).

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, May 26, 2024 at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dr. John Hagmann officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery.
