Karen Lynn Penland, 46, of Morganton, NC passed away on February 1st 2025.

She was born on March 31st, 1978 in Cascade County, Montana. Karen was one of the most compassionate people you could have met. She loved with all her heart and never met a stranger. She enjoyed sunsets, nature, traveling, shopping, and she was always looking for ways to help the people around her. The most important thing in Karen’s life was her family. She was a loving, caring, and supportive cornerstone for her family. She was a model for what a mom, mimi, aunt, wife and friend should be. She was always there for her family in every way that she could be. She had friends that became her family and their loving bond was strong. Karen was an amazing nurse with a work ethic that was unmatched. She had come to find a second family with her coworkers at Broughton Hospital where she served for 23 years. Karen was a golden soul with an admirable appreciation for the mundane.

She was preceded in death by her son, Trevor Dale; mother, Carol Benfield; father-in-law, Ken Penland; sister Cathy Browning; brother Robert Lea; and brother George Lea.

She is survived by her husband Jeremy Penland; son Justin Dale (Cassidy); son Matt Dale; daughter Emma Penland; granddaughters Kallie Dale, Oakley Dale, Memphis Dale, and Leighton Dale; grandson Jaxson Dale; sisters Charlene Barber (Mike), Diane Newsome (Billy); brothers Jimmy Hensley Jr., Kevin Hensley; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

The family will receive friends from 2:30 to 4 p.m., Saturday, February 8, 2025 at Sossoman Funeral Home. The memorial service will follow in the Colonial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Keith Burkhart officiating.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Karen was like my child. As we worked side by side I witnessed her excellent nursing skills but more importantly her love and care for those in her charge. She shared her love for her family. She was one of a kind. The world is a bit colder with her gone. She was loved by all.
