Lloyd Ray Bartlett, 78, of Morganton, NC passed away unexpectedly on Monday, March 19th, 2024. He was born on September 21st, 1945 in Yancey County to the late Lewis Ray Bartlett and Retha Kay Gurley.
Lloyd graduated East Yancey High School in 1964. Following graduation, Lloyd worked for American Thread and eventually Great Lakes Carbon Plant where he eventually retired from after over 40 years of service.
Lloyd married Doris Ann Burleson after High School and settled in Morganton, NC where they had the late Robin Ann Bartlett and Scottie Ray Bartlett.
Lloyd greatly enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid gardener, being certified as a Master Gardener from NC State University. He also enjoyed teaching others the enjoyment of the outdoors, introducing many to trout fishing and small game hunting. One of Lloyd’s greatest enjoyments was that of rabbit hunting, raising numerous beagles over his life for both he and others to enjoy in this field. He was always full of stories about hunting with his brother Charles early in life and brother Ralph after retirement.
Lloyd was a member of Burkemont Baptist Church where he served in different capacities. He especially enjoyed teaching Sunday School and driving the church van for young and old to and from service. He was also very active in the rehabilitation of prisoners offering tutoring and sound advice for their future. Many of them kept in touch with Lloyd after release letting him know the important role he played in their life.
Lloyd’s most prized possession was his grandchildren Sarah Ann Bartlett and Ellie Rae Bartlett. He talked most often of how proud he was of them, letting everyone know just how smart and talented they were. Though he jokingly loved reminding his son “their talent must have come from grandparents or their mom’s side of the family!” Lloyd dearly loved them and speaking of their hard work whether in class, soccer field or volleyball court.
Lloyd was predeceased by daughter Robin Bartlett, sisters Clara Lee Pritchard, Grace Murphy, Lois Bailey, Lucille Glenn, Faye Carswell and brother Charles Bartlett. Surviving in addition to his son and grandchildren, is his brother Ralph Bartlett, girlfriend Linda Phillips, former wife Doris Layton, and former daughter-in-law, Susan Bartlett.
