Committal
Matthew Easterly Sweazey, age 57, died on August 26, 2024 in Hendersonville, NC.
His family includes his son Devin Sweazey, sister Anne Sweazey, brother Mike Sweazey and his dad, George Sweazey and a nephew, Dane Sweazey.
Matt was preceded in death by his mother, Sandra Easterly Sweazey.
Matt was a unique combination of traits and talents and skills. He was fascinated by the pursuit of cultural knowledge and he possessed a wealth of information on historic events, influential people, and pop culture. And he loved to share this knowledge with others, especially his son. His humor, which was clever and absurdist, was honed daily by writing, observing the world, and applying his poetic strengths. His love of writing crossed into his passion for music, often coming up with creative or introspective lyrics while playing the guitar or piano. When he set his mind to a project, problem, or gift he would ensure that every detail was perfect, and would not stop until he knew it was exactly as he envisioned; especially when it came to family or friends. He was a gifted teacher and passionate about teaching psychology. And he was very touched by the personal, heartfelt comments he received on evaluations from his students. Devin, Matt's son, would not be the person he is today without his father, and notes that Matt's influence played a key role in his successes, interests, and personality.
We will miss his warmth and passion and creativity and depth of feeling.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m., Sunday, September 1, 2024 at Sossoman Funeral Home. The memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. in the Colonial Chapel of the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers Matt would probably say "Buy a lottery ticket, this might be your lucky day!" Or you can make a donation to his favorite charity, the Make a Wish Foundation of North Carolina (wish.org/nc).
Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
Tribute Wall
Leave a tribute for Matthew Easterly Sweazey.
I have many fond memories of Matt as a vibrant, curious, child. His dad (my brother) encouraged him in the Outward Bound aerial exercises and Matt was confident and skilled in the outdoors. Later on, he was a thoughtful young man with a serious side. Always eager to explore ideas. I send my love and condolences to his dad, Anne, Mike, Devin, Dane, Bobbin and the Easterly family. Incredible teacher, remarkable friend. Always grateful for you and will never forget you. One day I’ll take young psychology students under my wing, just as you did for me, and I’ll tell them everything you told me. Rest in Peace, Matt.
