Maxine Frye Cutting died peacefully at Grace Ridge Health Care Facility on March 22, 2023, 3 months short of her 100th birthday. Born in Lincoln County, on June 11, 1923 to Claude and Florence Frye, she moved to Morganton in 1954 when her husband, Douglas Cutting, established Cutting Cross Chevrolet. They were married 54 years and enjoyed traveling abroad as well as Sundays at Lake James and beach trips with family and friends. Her involvement in the Morganton community spanned 60 years, and she was still volunteering at First United Methodist church well into her nineties. Known for her outgoing, friendly nature and her ever present smile, her wit and wisdom connected her to friends and neighbors of all ages. An avid bridge player and golfer, she enjoyed her wide circle of longtime bridge groups and the couples golf group, The Turtles, who enjoyed more than 25 years of golf outings and friendship. Her love of gardening continued when she moved to Grace Ridge in 2001 where she established a special garden plot that she could enjoy from her porch. During her illness, she could still identify every flower brought to her. She never missed a basketball game when her son's Davidson Wildcats or daughter's Tarheels were on TV until her final days.

Maxine was preceded in death by her husband, Douglas O. Cutting and sister, Hope Hartley.

Surviving are her son, Dr. D. Scott Cutting (Jonsye) of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., daughter, Cameron C. Wilkinson (Neill) of Charlotte, N.C., beloved grandson and granddaughter, Douglas Cutting (Jeni) and Spencer Kokoski (Greg) and her great grandchildren, Hunter and Adelaide Cutting, Jennings and Alexander Kokoski who lovingly called her Granny Mac. She was also blessed with devoted nephews, Bob Cutting and Steve Hodges and her niece, Niki Hummers. Her grand dogs, Buzzy and Pogey were a great source of comfort, entertainment and joy when they came to visit.

She was fortunate to be surrounded by the nurses and staff at Grace Ridge whose care and kindness was ever present as well as special daily companions Loretta, Joyce and Betty Ann who served as angels in our midst as well as her many friends who visited her often.

A private graveside service will be held on March 26, 2023. Following, there will be a reception at Grace Ridge from 2:00-3:30 on March 26, 2023 in the Grace Ridge Chapel.

Memorials can be sent to First United Methodist Church, 200 N. King Street, Morganton, N.C. 28655 or Amorem Hospice Care, 902 Kirkwood St. NW, Lenoir, N.C. 28645.
