Committal
Rebecca Pitts Mitchell, affectionately known as “Gee”, 75, of Jamestown, NC went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, October 10, 2024. Born and raised in Morganton, NC on August 2, 1949, she was the daughter of the late Philip H. Pitts, Sr. and the late Vivian H. Pitts.
Rebecca was a graduate of Lenoir Rhyne University and enjoyed a 30-year career teaching first grade, loving her students, and being a mentor for those new to the profession. In addition to her love for children, she was also a devout Christian and was active in her church organizations all her life. Rebecca also had a love for animals, including dogs and cats, and loved to spend time birdwatching. Rebecca was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend and will be missed by all who knew her.
Rebecca is survived by her husband, James C. Mitchell, Jr.; daughter, Jennifer M. Vestal (Lee); son, James C. “Trey” Mitchell, III (Ashley); grandchildren, Spencer, Grayson, Alayna (Reign), Gracie, and Aubrey; great-grandson, Adonis; sister-in-law, Jackie Pitts (Philip); and many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends that loved her dearly.
In addition to her parents, Rebecca was preceded in death by her brothers, Noah Andrews Pitts and Philip H. Pitts, Jr.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, October 19, 2024 at First Baptist Church of Morganton, NC with Dr. Thomas A. Bland, Jr. officiating. The family will be receiving guests in the fellowship hall following the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Trellis Supportive Care, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or to First Baptist Church of Morganton, P.O. Box 459, Morganton, NC 28680.
Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.

There was never a kinder, more loving person as Rebecca. I knew her in college and remained her friend until her death. I am glad her pain is over and she is in the company of Jesus. Praise be to God for her life.

A woman of faith! Grace! Love! Laughter! Beauty! Friendships! Service! She touched so many hearts and lives and is now in the everlasting arms of Jesus and basking in His divine love. Thanking God for the gift she was! Hugs to her family.

I was sad to learn of Rebecca’s death. I knew her from Westchester Country Day School, where we both taught. She was a light and a calming presence. Her steadfast faith was always visible. She was loved by her students and all who knew her.
My heart is so broken to hear the death of my child hood friend I spent many nights at the Pitts lake house Actually her brother Andy taught me how to water ski Growing up with Rebecca was a joy Overnight sleep overs, Girl Scouts and all times together with our many friends We were meshed as forever friends And she will always fill a special place in my heart I just rejoice in the fact the her painful journey has ended and she is now reunited with her dear family and special brothers Rest well my sweet dear friend
