Sandra “Sue” Stuart Vaughn

Sandra “Sue” Stuart Vaughn, 77, of Morganton, NC peacefully passed away after a brief struggle with cancer on August 26, 2024.

She was born in Cripple Creek, Virginia in 1946 to Edith Jonas Stuart and George Stuart. She attended Fries High School, graduated in 1965, and eloped three weeks later with the love of her life, Benton. They soon moved to Newport, NC where they lived for 51 years.

Sue began her work life at Hanes Corporation in Galax, VA. After moving to North Carolina, she worked as a loan officer at Cherry Point Federal Credit Union in Havelock, later becoming a Branch Manager. She left to pursue work with Safrit’s Building Supply Company in Beaufort, NC, eventually becoming the Chief Financial Officer. Sue worked for Safrit’s for 21 years, retiring in 2012 with many fond memories.

Sue loved art, especially quilting. She spent many lunch hours at Safrit’s quilting with Patty Arthur and other friends, making works of art that celebrated others. She loved gardening and would photograph beautiful flowers she found on her adventures with Benton. Sue enjoyed playing Canasta, teaching her grandson how to win and lose with grace.

Sue will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 59 years, Benton Vaughn; son, Ken Vaughn (Amy); grandson, Evan; adopted granddaughter Irina Brown (Chase); brother, Darrell Stuart (Debbie); sister, Penny Allen (David); brother-in-law Calvin Vaughn, and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Preceding Sue in death are parents, Edith and George Stuart; brothers, Wade Stuart, Otis Stuart; and sister Patsy (Pat) Huffman.

A private graveside service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Sue’s memory can be made to the American Cancer Society.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.
