Vonda Lee Stroupe, 77, of Morganton, NC, passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, April 27, 2023, while surrounded by her loved ones.

Born in December 19, 1945 in Glen Alpine, she was the daughter of the late Joseph “Red” Stroupe and Ruth Isaacs Stroupe.

Vonda was an outstanding athlete and band member at Glen Alpine High School and was a proud member of the Glen Alpine Sports Hall of Fame. She furthered her education at Appalachian State University and began her career at Western Carolina Center following her graduation.

Vonda devoted many years to the residents of “the center” and developed lasting friendships. For her efforts on behalf of many handicapped people, she received the NC Order of the Long Leaf Pine. Following her retirement, a garden was created in her name. Miss Stroupe spread joy and happiness wherever she went.

Vonda enjoyed outdoor activities, crafts, pets, and nature. She will be forever loved and remembered.

Miss Stroupe is survived by Roxie Watson and Karen Hutchens.

As Vonda requested, no ceremonies will be held to honor her life. She desired for her life to be celebrated by each person in that person’s own special way.

If you want to make a memorial contribution in Vonda’s memory, please choose a charity you support.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Vonda was one of the most generous, kind and giving person I know and that I was blessed to call a friend. I worked with Vonda at JIRDC - she was so very supportive as a supervisor and such a wonderful advocate for the residents she served so compassionately. She was one of a kind and will be missed dearly by so many. Thank you Vonda for your friendship and support over decades of time. My sincere condolences to Karen and Roxie.

I met Vonda many years ago during our glory days at “the Center.” It was an unforgettable time as was Vonda. She was unforgettable. She was a joy to work with and be around. Vonda was good at everything she did. She was passionate about her work with the precious ones who resided at the Center, her friends and everything she did. I admired her in so many ways and loved being called a friend. To know Vonda was to love her. She was an amazing woman. She was so “cool!”
